Delahunt Announces Federal Export Conference

09/15/2009
WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Rep. Bill Delahunt announced today that the federal Overseas Private Investment Corporation, which is headed by Acting President Dr. Lawrence Spinelli, will be conducting a workshop in Boston on Thursday, September 24th for women and minority-owned business in the New England area.

The all day conference will begin at 8:45AM at the Westin Hotel in Copley Place, which is located at 10 Huntington Avenue, Boston, MA. Registration will commence at 7:30AM. Registration information is available at: http://www.trademeetings.com/PDF/OPICExpandingHorizons.pdf.

“OPIC and Dr. Spinelli clearly understand that small business is the engine that drives America’s economy”, said Rep. Delahunt. “Ensuring access to capital and risk insurance for minority and women-owned enterprises who want to expand their businesses by exporting is essential as we look to grow the economy during these difficult times.”

According to Dr. Spinelli, speakers will include senior government officials from OPIC and other federal agencies, including the Small Business Administration, the Department of Commerce’s US Commercial Service, the Export-Import Bank of the US, and the Minority Business Development Agency.

In addition, representatives from businesses investing overseas will share their insights and experiences.  Networking opportunities will be available and participants will be able to arrange individual meetings with OPIC and other federal officials.

OPIC was established as an independent agency of the U.S. government in 1971 and currently does business in over 150 countries. Its mission is to facilitate the participation of US private capital and skills in the economic and social development of less developed countries and areas, and countries in transition from nonmarket to market economies.

OPIC assists US companies by providing financing, political risk insurance and investment funds. OPIC complements the private sector in managing risks associated with foreign direct investment and supports US foreign policy.
