Delahunt Praises Ireland On Decision To Accept Guantanamo Detainees

07/29/2009
WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Rep. Bill Delahunt, Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on International Organizations, Human Rights and Oversight, released the following statement in praising Ireland on its recent decision to resettle two Guantanamo detainees who have been cleared of all wrongdoing:

“I would like to thank Irish Prime Minister Cowan, Ambassador Collins and the Irish people for their generosity and commitment to human rights.  Guantanamo is a black mark on the reputation of the United States and we should be proud to have friends like Ireland that are helping us close this facility.  I hope, in the future, the United States will be able to show the same fortitude of character and accept some of these wrongly imprisoned detainees.
