“The Sparrow property is the vital last piece of an interconnecting puzzle connecting over 535 acres of open space in Orleans,” Delahunt said. “The federal funding is vital in helping to ensure that this land is preserved for future generations to visit and enjoy.”
The purchase of this parcel will allow public access to the 69 acre Kendrick Woods area already owned by the town, making the area available for walking, nature exploration and passive recreation. The parcel is located at the intersection of Route 28 and Namequoit Road and is comprised of pine/oak upland and freshwater shrub swamp wetlands.
The Land and Conservation Fund is a partnership program that provides matching funds to states and local communities for acquisition, development, and conservation of parks and open space. The program is administered by the National Park Service in partnership with state governments.
