Delahunt To Host Mortgage Foreclosure Prevention Forum

04/13/2009
WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Rep. Bill Delahunt will sponsor a “Foreclosure Prevention Workshop” on Thursday, April 30, from 6:30pm to 8:30pm at the Thomas Crane Public Library, 40 Washington Street, Quincy.

“Thousands of homeowners living on the South Shore are at risk of foreclosure due to the proliferation of high risk mortgages and the current downturn in the economy,” Delahunt said. “Unfortunately, far too many have found it difficult to stay in their homes due to the unwillingness of many loan servicers and banks to restructure these questionable mortgages. In addition, various mortgage assistance scams now entering the marketplace are making matters worse.”

Delahunt will join with the Quincy Community Action Program and the staff of Greater Boston Legal Services to help consumers understand how the foreclosure process works and the various loan “work-out” plans being promoted by the FDIC and other agencies.  This workshop is designed to help homeowners, tenants and consumers get the facts, understand their rights, and learn about the various options that are available to them in avoiding the foreclosure process.

Delahunt has invited senior representatives from the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office and the Massachusetts Division of Banks to participate on the panel and be available to answer homeowners’ questions. At the close of the program, volunteer law students, housing counselors and the panelists will be on hand for one-on-one counseling.

Nadine Cohen, a Senior Attorney with the GBLS Consumer Rights Project said, “It is really important that people facing foreclosure understand the process and their options. We are glad to participate in this very timely community meeting.”

"The earlier we can work with homeowners the better,” said Beth Ann Strollo, the Executive Director of Quincy Community Action Programs. “We hope local homeowners take this opportunity to learn about counseling help available to them now before their rates change and before it is too late to help".

Further information on the forum is available through the Congressman’s South Shore office at 800-794-9911.
