Delahunt: U.S. Passport Agency Forum On March 28th

03/24/2009
WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Bill Delahunt today announced that the United States Passport Agency will be hosting an information session on Saturday, March 28, 2009 on new travel requirements set to take effect on June 1, 2009.

Saturday’s forum is from 10am-3pm, at the O’Neill Federal Building, 10 Causeway Street, Boston in Room 247.

“Every year, millions of Americans leave the country to conduct business, study or go on vacation,” said Delahunt. “I commend the U.S. Passport Agency for being proactive and working to educate the public about this new policy.”

Laura Pascarella, the Acting National Customer Service Manager of Passport Services for the US Department of State added, “We are excited to have over 2,000 Passport Application Acceptance Facilities across the country join our Regional Passport Agencies in celebrating Passport Day in the USA. Passport Day in the USA will provide a convenient opportunity for Americans to apply for a U.S. Passport Book or U.S. Passport Card outside of normal business hours, in preparation for the June 1 change in travel requirements.”

Beginning June 1, 2009, adults 16 years of age and older will be required to present a passport book or passport card when entering the United States from Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and Bermuda at land borders and sea ports of entry. Currently through May 2009, adults traveling back from Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and Bermuda at land borders and sea ports of entry only need an original US birth certificate or US naturalization certificate and proof of identity.

Children under the age of 16 are exempt from the new border crossing requirements.  Therefore, children under 16 traveling by land will only be required to carry either their certified US birth certificate or naturalization certificate.  However, those family groups that would like to take advantage of the fast-clearance lanes at land border crossings will be required to have one of the approved trusted-traveler cards, such as the Passport Card, for every individual in the car.
