Delahunt To Conclude Hearings On New War Powers Resolution

04/21/2008

WASHINGTON, DC – On Thursday, Congressman Bill Delahunt’s Foreign Affairs Subcommittee will hold the final hearing in its series on “War Powers for the 21st Century.”  This hearing features former executive branch officials, who will testify on the constitutionality and the practicality of the existing War Powers Resolution as well as legislation which would modernize it that has been introduced by Representative Walter Jones Jr. and Chairman Delahunt.  The Jones-Delahunt proposal would require congressional approval in advance for all combat missions other than emergency defense of U.S. territory, troops, and citizens.

Previous hearings in the series focused on the congressional and constitutional perspectives on the division of war power between Congress and President.  With the conclusion of the series of hearings, Jones and Delahunt will incorporate suggestions from the witnesses and then push for congressional consideration of their bill.
