02/13/2008

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Bill Delahunt announced today that South Shore Community Action, Inc. of Plymouth and Cape Cod Child Development, Inc. of Hyannis have been awarded $1,043,405 and $1,663,968 respectively, by the Department of Health and Human Services as part of the Head Start program.

“For over forty years, Head Start has proven its worth as an effective tool in preparing children in Southeastern Massachusetts and across the country for success in school.” said Delahunt. “The least we can do is to make sure that our disadvantaged young people receive the academic skills, nutrition and health services they need, and help to pave the way for their future achievements.”

“The Head Start grant has made it possible to provide a quality program for 235 young children who are at risk.” said Patricia Daly, the Executive Director of South Shore Community Action, Inc. “I join with local teachers, pediatricians and social service agencies when I express my heartfelt thanks to the Congressman for supporting Head Start programs in the 10th Congressional district. Head Start changes the lives of children and their families for the better.”

Created in 1965, the Head Start program provides grants to public and private non-profit agencies to provide comprehensive child development services to economically disadvantaged children and their families from birth to age five. There is a special focus on helping preschoolers develop the early reading and math skills they need to become successful in school. Parents are also engaged in their children's learning since their help is vital as part of their children’s progress in attaining their educational, cognitive and social goals.
