Delahunt Press Conference Thursday To Announce Constitutional War Powers Resolution

10/24/2007

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Bill Delahunt (D-MA) will hold a press conference on Thursday, October 25, 2007, at 10:30 a.m. in the House Radio/TV Gallery (H-321) to announce the introduction of H. J. Res. 53, the Constitutional War Powers Resolution.  Joining Mr. Delahunt will be the bill’s author, Representative Walter Jones (R-NC), as well as Congressmen Wayne Gilchrest (R-MD) and Ron Paul (R-TX), co-sponsors of the joint resolution.

As threats to international peace and security continue to evolve, the Constitutional War Powers Resolution rededicates Congress to its primary constitutional role of deciding when to use force abroad.  Since U.S. involvement in Korea, Presidents of both parties have used military force abroad without the consent of Congress. By ensuring that Congress meets its constitutional responsibility, H. J. Res. 53 improves upon the War Powers Resolution of 1973 to establish a clear and sustainable war powers policy for today’s post-9/11 world.

Who:  Reps. Bill Delahunt (D-MA), Walter Jones (R-NC), Wayne Gilchrest (R-MD) and Ron Paul (R-TX)

What:  Press conference to announce the Constitutional War Powers Resolution
