Kennedy, Kerry, Delahunt Announce Passage of Bill to Aid Cape & Islands Water Resources

09/24/2007

WASHINGTON, DC – Senators Edward M. Kennedy and John F. Kerry and Representative William D. Delahunt announced today that Congress has passed legislation relating to five navigation improvements projects for Cape Cod.

The Water Resources Development Act, which passed the Senate today, directs the Army Corps of Engineers to study Woods Hole, the East Basin of Cape Cod Canal in Sandwich, and Oak Bluffs Harbor to determine whether the Army Corps should proceed with dredging in those areas to improve navigation.

The Act also modifies the coordinates of the federal navigation channels in Chatham’s Aunt Lydia’s Cove and Falmouth Harbor.  The modifications will support waterfront development by increasing access to the channels.

Kennedy said, “These projects are important for the Cape and Islands.  They’ll contribute substantially to economic growth in the region, and I look forward to their completion.”

Kerry said, “These projects will boost the economic future of the Cape and Islands and give more residents an opportunity to enjoy boating, fishing and other activities.”

Delahunt said, "I am pleased that the Congress has finally acted and will allow these vital dredging projects to move forward. These projects are important to the safety of mariners and the economy of the Cape and Islands."

The Water Resources Development Act authorizes the Army Corps of Engineers to conduct civil works projects such as flood prevention, navigation dredging, and ecological restoration throughout the nation.  With final approval of the bill by both chambers, the bill will next go to the President for his signature to become law.
