Delahunt Announces Winners Of Congressional Art Competition

06/04/2007

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Bill Delahunt today announced the winners of this year’s Congressional Art Competition which featured entries from twenty-five local communities in the Tenth District.

“The extraordinary exhibition is a graphic reflection of the talent and potential of our kids and their teachers, and underscores the enduring value of arts education,” said Delahunt.

Last week a ceremony honoring the contest participants attracted dozens of area families to an exhibition of all of the entries at the South Shore Art Center in Cohasset. Tim Wolfe of Marstons Mills who attends Sacred Heart High School was awarded “Best of Show” for his drawing, “Portrayal.” Mr. Wolfe’s drawing depicts a self portrait in which the competition judges found particular merit because of its tightly framed composition and highly professional technique. Students from Pembroke, Marshfield, Scituate and Rockland High Schools also won first-place awards in each of the six individual media categories.

The national exhibition of outstanding high school artwork will be exhibited in the Cannon Tunnel, a pedestrian walkway leading to the United States Capitol Building, for a full year alongside other winning entries form across the country. Since 1982, over 5,000 local contests have been conducted that have involved more than 650,000 high school students.   With over 100 participants from Quincy to Provincetown, this year’s competition was one of the largest since its inception in 1997.

Congressman Delahunt expressed a special thanks to the panel of judges: Valerie Vitali, a Scituate artist and instructor and board member at the South Shore Arts Center; Tony Andrade of Quincy, a prize winning photographer and artist in watercolor, oil and pastel; and Erica Adams of Mashpee, an interdisciplinary artist and art writer who teaches at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.
