Delahunt Announces Appointments To U.S. Service Academies

01/15/2007

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Bill Delahunt announced that he has been notified that 5 local students have been offered appointments to U.S. Service Academies.

“At a time when we are reminded daily about the courage and sacrifice of our armed forces, these students have embraced this opportunity for a fine education, while devoting themselves to serving our country,” Delahunt said. “Their families, friends and teachers can take enormous pride in their commitment.”

The offered appointments by West Point, Annapolis, Coast Guard and Kings Point are:

Douglas Canner          Plymouth(Annapolis)
Susan Truelove          Duxbury(Annapolis)
Caroline Lockett         Manomet(Annapolis, West Point)
Bryan Boyle               Dennis(Kings Point)
Patrick Buckley          Duxbury(US Coast Guard)

The young people who have been offered appointments continue an appointment rate that is far above the national average of ten percent. The Congressman attributed the high rate of success to the quality of the applicants from the South Shore and Cape and Islands -- and to the dedicated members of the Tenth Congressional District Service Academy Nomination Committee.

For those Tenth District high school students and their families interested in learning more about and pursuing these unique educational opportunities, Rep. Delahunt has announced that nomination applications to any one of the four US Service Academies are now available through his office.

Students interested in entering one of the Academies in the 2008-2009 school year may request a nomination application by writing to him at 1250 Hancock Street, Suite 802N, Quincy, MA 02169 or by filling out a web form at http://www.house.gov/delahunt/academy.shtml. To be eligible, a candidate must be a resident of the Tenth Congressional District who has graduated from high school by June of 2008.  The deadline for a completed application for next school year is November 1, 2008.
