Glencoe
Airport Receives Federal Designation
(WASHINGTON,
DC) –
U.S.
Rep. Collin Peterson announced that the Glencoe
Municipal
Airport
has received designation from the Federal Aviation Administration to be
included in the National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems (NPIAS).
“The growth of this region and the development of Highway 212 have made the
Glencoe area ripe for expansion of these kinds of services,” Peterson said.
“After two years of work to get this designation, I’m happy to see that the
Glencoe airport will now have more opportunities to meet the demand for air
travel in the region.”
The
NPIAS identifies existing and proposed airports that are significant to national
air transportation and thus eligible to receive Federal grants. It also includes
estimates of the amount of AIP money needed to fund infrastructure development
projects that will bring these airports up to current design standards and add
capacity to congested airports. The FAA is required to provide Congress with a
5-year estimate of AIP eligible development every 2 years.
The
Glencoe
Municipal
Airport
has the ability to acquire 6.2 acres for hanger expansions and would be
eligible to expand it’s runway to over 5000 feet to become one of 24 “KEY"
Airports in the State System Plan.
