Academy Nominations
Each year it is my extraordinary privilege to nominate exceptional young men and women to our nation's service academies. These prestigious and highly selective institutions offer young Hoosiers an opportunity to obtain a fully funded education and upon graduation to serve the United States as commissioned officers in our Armed Forces.
Students may apply for nomination to one or more of the following academies. To help your decision, each of these academies encourages you to order a catalog, visit their websites or call to speak with an academy graduate or student. Please find listed below, the addresses, telephone numbers, and web pages of the service academies.
If you are interested in attending a service academy you must begin the process by requesting a congressional nomination from my office. It is highly recommended that you begin this process in your Junior year to ensure you have sufficient time to complete all application materials. Eligibility Requirements
All candidates applying for a congressional nomination must meet the following eligibility requirements as of July 1st of the year of admission to a service academy:
Please note that the acceptance of an appointment to a United States service academy commits a candidate to five years of active duty and three years of reserve service after graduation.

In your letter, please include your name, mailing address, daytime phone number, email address, and the year you plan to enter the academy.
You may also click here to download the U.S. Service Academy Nomination Application form or call my district office at (317) 283-6516. Make sure to complete the application, print it, sign it, and mail or deliver it to the District Office before the deadline.
Please note that we are currently accepting applications for 2011 entry. Completed applications and all accompanying documents must be submitted directly to my District Office by November. 1, 2010.
Please remember that it is your responsibility to directly contact your academy or academies of choice to request a pre-candidate questionnaire and complete a candidate file. The questionnaire may also be completed online by visiting each academy’s webpage. Selection Process Candidates will be evaluated using a competitive system recommended by the academies. The selection process includes a personal interview, and a review of your application, essays, academic records, letters of recommendation, community involvement, character, and leadership experience.
Please note that a congressional nomination is not a guarantee of admission. The final decision will be made by the academy itself following a “whole-person” evaluation that considers a candidate’s character, scholarship, leadership, physical aptitude, medical fitness, goals and motivation. |
I encourage all interested students to apply for a nomination to the U.S. Military Academy (West Point), U.S. Air Force Academy, U.S. Naval Academy, U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and U.S. Coast Guard Academy. Students accepted receive full paid tuition and a modest living stipend. Eligible applicants must be at least 17 years old but not have passed their 23rd birthday, a U.S. citizen, unmarried and have no legal obligation to support children or other dependents.
Receiving a congressional nomination is required for admission (except for the U.S. Coast Guard Academy), but it does not guarantee admission to an academy. Academy admissions offices evaluates each candidate's high school record, class rank, standardized test scores, extracurricular activities, fitness exam and moral character before making their selections.
