Transportation

With increasing traffic congestion throughout much of Virginia, I am acutely aware of the need to address transportation and infrastructure projects that affect Virginians’ quality of life.  Some projects demand action now, but we must also invest in longer-term and diversified infrastructure projects.

In addition to expanding our roadways and securing our bridges, better and more reliable public transit means fewer cars on the road and less anxiety for Virginia commuters.  In 2008, I worked to support the appropriation of tens of millions of dollars for transportation infrastructure, including $35 million for new rail cars for the Metro system, $35 million in additional funds for the Dulles Corridor rail projects, and over $2 million each for interchange improvements at 1-95 and the Fairfax County Parkway at Newington, U.S. Route 1 and 123 in Prince William.

I understand the transportation challenges that our growing Commonwealth faces, and I will continue to work with our partners in state and local government and my colleagues in Congress to ensure that Virginia receives its fair share of federal transportation funding for highways, transit systems, airports, and rail lines throughout the Commonwealth.
