Each spring, a nation-wide high school arts competition is sponsored by the Members of the U.S. House of Representatives. The Artistic Discovery Contest is an opportunity to recognize and encourage the artistic talent in the nation, as well as in our congressional district.

The Artistic Discovery Contest is open to all high school students in Florida's 8th Congressional District. The overall winner of our District competition will be displayed for one year in the U.S. Capitol. The exhibit in Washington will include artwork from the contest winners from all 435 Congressional District in America.

2010 Congressional Art Competition Guidelines

2010 Congressional Art Competition Student Information and Release Form - this must be filled out, sign by the student and teacher, and submitted with the entry.

The deadline for submissions is Wednesday, April 7, 2010.  Judging will be conducted on Saturday, April 24, 2010.  The winner will be announced at a reception on Saturday, May 8th.  The ceremony will be held at the LifeDance International Training Center (1330 Winter Garden Vineland Road/CR535, Winter Garden, FL, 34787).  The public is welcome.

Entries may be up to 28 inches by 28 inches by 4 inches (including the frame) and cannot weigh more than 15 lbs.

The art work may be:

  • Paintings - including oil, acrylics, and watercolor
  • Drawings - including pastels, colored pencil, pencil, charcoal, ink, and markers
  • Collage
  • Prints - including lithographs, silkscreen, and block prints
  • Mixed Media
  • Computer-Generated Art
  • Photography

All entries must be an original in concept, design and execution.

The Congressional Art Competition began in 1982 to provide an opportunity for members of Congress to encourage and recognize the artistic talents of their young constituents. Since then, more than 650,000 high school students have been involved with the competition.

Congressman Alan Grayson named Ryan Baum the winner of the 2010 "An Artistic Discovery" Congressional Art Competition. Judges selected his submission, entitled "Hope For Haiti" (above), as the best of the entries.  Students from nine high schools in Florida's 8th Congressional District submitted entries for the competition.
