Lehigh County

Lehigh County is located in eastern Pennsylvania, part of the Lehigh Valley. The county has a population of approximately 340,000 and its seat is in the city of Allentown.

Lehigh County’s unique position between Philadelphia and New York makes it an ideal location for commuters, but hardly a sleeper community, the county boasts an abundance of recreational, cultural, and entertainment opportunities, as well as thriving local industry.

Dorney Amusement Park, home of the famous hypercoaster, “Steel Force,” and Wildwater Kingdom Water Park are located in Allentown, as is Coca-Cola Ball Park, where the Iron Pigs, the Philadelphia Phillies’s AAA minor league baseball team, play their home games.

The Lehigh Valley Zoo, in Schnecksville, is home to the northern river otter, the red kangaroo, the arctic wolf, and the African penguin. The Zoo’s Wild Animal C.A.R.E. Club allows individuals to help support the wildlife that we all cherish.

Macungie is proud to hold the annual Das Awkscht Fescht, one of the country’s largest antique and classic car shows. For 45 years, the car show has been an annual summer tradition offering three days of outdoor events, entertainment, and some of the finest automobiles around.

The county also has an impressive collection of parks and nature preserves, including the Trexler Nature Preserve, Leaser Lake, Cedar Creek Parkway East and West, and the Bob Rodale Cycling and Fitness Park.

Lehigh’s rich history is on display in Saylor Park and the Cement Industry Museum, which honors David O. Saylor (1827-1884), the father of the American Portland Cement Industry. Nine preserved Schoefer vertical kilns are on display in the museum.

Another historic site, the Troxell-Steckel House and Farm Museum, is a colonial stone farmhouse built in 1755 by John Peter Troxell. Now owned by the Lehigh County Historical Society, the Troxell-Steckel house showcases the German medieval style architecture that was brought to eastern Pennsylvania by German settlers during the 18th Century.

Lehigh County is also home to several colleges and universities including Penn State Lehigh Valley, DeSales University, Lehigh Carbon Community College, Cedar Crest College, and Muhlenberg College.
