This week, we paused on Veteran's Day to recognize the brave men and women who have served in our nation's Armed Forces. Their devotion to ensuring our freedom and democracy is an inspiration for us all.
As we remember the sacrifices veterans and their families have made, we must also work to renew our commitment to the millions of veterans across our country and the more than 63,000 in the 7th Congressional District. Whether it's measures to expand educational opportunities or provide economic relief, we must guarantee that the men and women who have served this nation receive the benefits they need and deserve.
Over the past few years, we've seen tremendous accomplishments like the New GI Bill, enhanced military pay, and the largest funding increase for health care in the 78-year history of U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. In the upcoming Congress, I will continue to support America's service members and do everything possible to honor them for defending our freedom and standing for justice both at home and abroad.
Cost Should Never Be a Barrier to College Today's Indianapolis Star featured an op-ed I wrote about the importance of ensuring that every college-ready student has the opportunity to pursue his or her dream of higher education. Deadline for Stop Loss Payments is Approaching Time and time again, our veterans have risked their lives for our country, often facing deployments on multiple combat tours. Many retiring veterans were compelled to continue serving on active duty through a program known as stop loss. While the situation on the ground often made stop loss unavoidable, these veterans clearly deserve to be compensated for their continued sacrifice.
Under the Retroactive Stop Loss Special Pay (RSLSP) program, which I voted to pass last year, veterans will receive $500 for each month they served in stop loss status. All service members, veterans and beneficiaries of service members who served under Stop Loss between Sept. 11, 2001 and Sept. 30, 2009 are eligible for RSLSP. To receive compensation, veterans must submit their RSLSP claims on or before December 3, 2010. Our brave men and women have earned this compensation, and I want to make sure they receive it. That's why it's so important that these soldiers and veterans apply for the reimbursement. For more information about Retroactive Stop Loss Special Pay, please click here. I encourage all interested students to apply for a nomination to the U.S. Military Academy (West Point), U.S. Air Force Academy, U.S. Naval Academy, U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and U.S. Coast Guard Academy. Students accepted receive full paid tuition and a modest living stipend. Eligible applicants must be at least 17 years old but not have passed their 23rd birthday, a U.S. citizen, unmarried and have no legal obligation to support children or other dependents.
Receiving a congressional nomination is required for admission (except for the U.S. Coast Guard Academy), but it does not guarantee admission to an academy. Academy admissions offices evaluates each candidate's high school record, class rank, standardized test scores, extracurricular activities, fitness exam and moral character before making their selections.
