"There is no group of Americans more deserving of our recognition, our gratitude, and our devotion than our nation’s veterans. South Florida is a community that many of our nation’s veterans call home, and working on behalf of them in Congress is a tremendous honor. Paying tribute to our nation’s heroes is deeply important to me. My own father was a World War II veteran who earned a Purple Heart while fighting at the Battle of the Bulge. While he is no longer with us, I strive to honor his sacrifice and the sacrifice of our living veterans by doing what’s right by them in Congress.

"We live in trying times. Americans are frustrated by the magnitude of our economic challenges and our national debates have been heated. We must work together to ensure that partisanship in Washington does not cloud the judgment of our leaders and jeopardize the recent gains we’ve made on behalf of our veterans. Congress recently passed a sixty percent increase in funding for veterans, which is helping our servicemen and women recover from traumatic brain injury, post traumatic stress disorder, and other injuries sustained in battle. The new G.I. is opening the door to economic opportunity by providing the men and women returning from Iraq and Afghanistan with a quality education. In addition, for the first time in history, our veterans’ services include prenatal and infant care for our female veterans.

"As the 111^th Congress comes to a close and reconvenes as the 112^th Congress this January, please know that I will be a stalwart defender of these improvements to our veterans’ services. Those who serve in our military, who risk their lives because they believe in this country, who leave their families and loved ones because of a higher duty, deserve nothing less."
