USDA and Chandler Announce New Wastewater System for Estill County

WASHINGTON (August 18, 2010)—Today, at an event held at City Hall in Irvine, Congressman Ben Chandler and U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) officials announced a Rural Development grant and loan to help Irvine and Estill County develop their water treatment infrastructure and extend service.  USDA officials, Irvine Mayor Ernest Farmer, and other Estill County officials spoke at the event.

“These tough economic times have stretched our local governments thin, making it difficult to update basic, necessary infrastructure,” Chandler said. “But infrastructure is absolutely essential to bringing jobs here and helping Estill County’s economy grow.  The USDA and the Recovery Act have stepped in today to help lay the foundation for real long-term economic growth in Irvine and the whole of Estill County.”

Irvine Municipal Utilities and the Estill County Water District wastewater collection systems are in the process of merging. The county and city will use the nearly $5 million in loans and $2 million in grants to update their facilities, build a new pumping station, and extend service to the Wisemantown area of Estill County.  The funding was made possible by the USDA and the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (Recovery Act)—which Congressman Chandler supported.
