NY Red Cross chapter sending translators to Haiti- Crains New York

Even Terry Bischoff's optimism was surpassed. When the chief executive of the American Red Cross of Greater New York was asked to assemble a team of Creole-speakers to volunteer in Haiti, she hoped she would find at least 30.
But less than a week later, with a little help, the Red Cross chapter was able to round up 50 volunteers to assist and translate for medical personnel aboard the U.S. Navy's hospital ship USNS Comfort for a 30-day mission of mercy. Helping to round up translators were the healthcare workers' union 1199 SEIU, Congresswoman Yvette Clarke, city Councilman Mathieu Eugene and the Haitian Americans United for Progress based in Cambria Heights, Queens,. The volunteers will leave for Miami Tuesday evening, where they will await the ship's Thursday departure to Haiti.
