Congressman Chris Smith (R-NJ) is the author of numerous landmark federal laws, including the nation's first law that deals specifically with human trafficking. This historic law the Victims of Trafficking and Violence Protection Act (P.L. 106-386) and the subsequent reauthorizations (also authored by Smith) form the crux of the federal government's efforts to prosecute sex traffickers and to help trafficking victims rebuild their lives.
Smith is the author of over a dozen veterans laws including Veterans Education and Benefits Expansion Act of 2001 (Public Law 107-103) which modernized GI Bill and increased funding for the successful program by 60%.
In conjunction with his contributions to U.S. foreign policy and his legislative efforts to aid our veterans, Smith is also responsible for laws that promote significant advancements in healthcare and medical research and treatments, including the nation's first law to support the use of ethical, life-saving stem cells.
