Mississippi’s First Congressional District is a unique region located in the rolling hills of North Mississippi. The district includes 24 counties and is home to more than 760,000 Mississippians.
Agriculture is a top contributor to Mississippi’s economy and includes a wide variety of both specialty and commodity crops such as cotton, timber, sweet potatoes, melons, sweet onions, soybeans, and organic crops.
Small businesses are a vital contributor to Mississippi's local economies. Throughout the state, there are an estimated 209,100 small businesses, which employ more than half of Mississippi's non-farm workforce.
North Mississippi is a rural region with picturesque landscapes, rich history, and vibrant culture, as well as 90,000 acres of public outdoor recreation lands. The Holly Springs and Tombigbee National Forests, six Wildlife Management Areas, and land owned by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers make the First District an ideal area for fishing, hunting, and other outdoor recreation activities. North Mississippi is also home to generations of talent, including William Faulkner, John Grisham, Elvis Presley, and Tennessee Williams.
The First District comprises many higher education institutions such as the University of Mississippi, as well as two liberal arts colleges and five community colleges, which include Blue Mountain College, Rust College, East Mississippi Community College, Holmes Community College, Itawamba Community College, Northeast Mississippi Community College, and Northwest Mississippi Community College.
