Congressman Childers Encourages Students to Apply for Service Academy Nominations

October 9, 2010

Washington, DC – Congressman Travis Childers (MS-01) hosted the First Congressional District Academy Day on Saturday at the University of Mississippi. Academy Day comprised of numerous informational sessions on nominations to military service academies for high school students. Nearly 100 students and parents from across the First District attended the event as representatives from the U.S. service academies spoke about the application and nomination process.

“Each year, I have the privilege of nominating young men and women from Mississippi's First Congressional District for service academy appointment,” said Congressman Childers. “The service academies provide a top-notch education for their students, preparing them not only to be an officer in the armed forces, but to be critical thinkers and leaders for a lifetime.”

Representatives from the U.S. Military, U.S. Naval Academy, U.S. Air Force Academy, U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and U.S. Coast Guard Academy were in attendance. In addition, representatives from the ROTC programs at the University of Mississippi, Mississippi State University and University of Southern Mississippi held information sessions.

Nominations are required for all but the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, to which appointments are made on the basis of an annual nationwide competition. All Members of Congress are able to nominate qualified high school students for admission to one of the four service academies. In order to be considered for an appointment to a service academy, an applicant must meet the eligibility requirements established by law and be nominated by an authorized person, including Members of the House of Representatives, Members of the United States Senate or the Vice President’s office.
