Overview of Health Care Reform

HealthCare.gov: Take health care into your own hands Learn More
A majority in Congress has now taken decisive steps to guarantee affordable, quality health coverage for all Americans. The rising cost of health care has been draining family budgets and our national treasury for years, making the vote to control health care costs and protect Americans from the abusive practices of health insurance companies one of the most important actions we could take to support our middle-class families, seniors, and small businesses.

Without intervention, high costs would have prevented millions of Americans from getting the medical treatment they need, weighing down our economy and causing government deficits to soar. Left unaddressed, skyrocketing medical costs would have exacerbating America's health problems and eaten up an increasing amount of family budgets.

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, combined with improvements made by the Health Care and Education Affordability Reconciliation Act of 2010, establishes a strong framework for universal, affordable quality care for every American while reducing our federal deficit. The new law will further increase competition and ensure Marylanders and all Americans will no longer be burdened by uncontrollable and unpredictable increases in health care costs. Our country will be healthier and more economically sound for generations to come.

This website will explain the basics of the new law, how it might affect you and your family or business, and why we so urgently needed to act. I also answer the questions I hear most often from constituents about the health reform effort, and address some of the persistent rumors that have clouded efforts for an honest and open debate.
