Infrastructure

The construction and maintenance of highways and other infrastructure are essential for the continued development of a rural state like West Virginia. By working to improve the state's infrastructure, Congresswoman Shelley Moore Capito is promoting safety and helping grow the economy.

Fluctuating gas prices, aging facilities and an outdated highway system present real challenges to the nation's development. As a member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, Capito is at the forefront of reauthorizing the nation's Surface Transportation Act to improve highways and infrastructure across the country.

She works closely with local officials to secure millions of dollars in federal funds for West Virginia projects including: $42.6 million to create a new Route 35, $29 million for renovating the Marmet Locks and Dams, $3 million for replacing the James Rumsey Bridge in Shepherdstown, and funding for numerous water resource projects throughout the district.

Capito has strongly opposed President Obama's planned budget cut to Corridor H, because she believes completing this unfinished Appalachian Regional Highway will ease travel and promote growth in the state.

The Congresswoman has been a leader in Congress on highway safety. She co-sponsored a bill that keeps roads safe and jobs in West Virginia by prohibiting Mexican trucks from operating freely in the United States.

A supporter of rail services, Capito backed the Passenger Rail Investment and Improvement Act that enhances the nation's passenger and freight rail system. She is also an advocate for Amtrak and the continuation of commuter rail services in West Virginia's Eastern Panhandle.

During the 111th Congress, Congresswoman Capito will continue her work on national transportation policy, while also supporting much-needed projects in West Virginia.
