Miller, Rogers Named to GOP Majority Transition Committee

Michigan Representatives Serve on U.S. House Leadership’s Planning Team for the 112th Congress

WASHINGTON – U.S. Congresswoman Candice Miller (MI-10) and Congressman Mike Rogers (MI-8) today issued the following statements announcing that they will serve as members of the House Republican committee to manage the transition to a new majority in the U.S. House of Representatives for the 112th Congress. The 22-member Majority Transition Committee team will review all House procedures and structures, with the goal of ensuring the new Congress can get to work immediately on the priorities of the American people.

“I am honored to serve the people of Michigan’s 10th District and ensure that their voice is heard every day in Congress,” Miller said. “The members of the Republican Transition Team and I are focused on how Congress can serve the American people more effectively and efficiently. House Republicans are committed to the priorities of our nation’s citizens and have formed a new governing agenda focused on bringing forward legislation that will generate job creation, cuts in federal spending and reforms to the way Congress operates. The Pledge to America, House Republican’s governing agenda, was made by listening with the American people and reflects their priorities. House Republicans are ready to take action immediately on their agenda to get our nation back to prosperity.”

“Given Michigan’s struggling economy and growing jobs crisis, I am pleased to be serving on the transition team,” said Rogers, who represents the 8th Congressional District. “Michigan voters were very clear in last week’s historic election on what they expect from the new Congress. The people have given Congress and the President a directive to work together to get Americans back to work. We must end the job-killing spending and borrowing spree that has put the nation deeply in debt to countries like China. Our focus will be on a common sense approach that gets government out of the way of our nation's job creators, and opens up the law-making process to full view of the citizens we serve.”

Miller and Rogers said the transition team has been charged with implementing the reforms to Congress in the Pledge to America and looking for additional ways to reform Congress so that it is more transparent, cost-effective, and accountable to the people.

NOTE: The Republican Pledge to America sets forth a plan to reform Congress and, in doing so, begin restoring the public trust. These reforms include:
• A requirement that legislation be available online for 3 days before a vote so that members of Congress and the American people can read the bill.
• A requirement that all bills include a citation of constitutional authority so that Congress respects the limits imposed on it by our founding document.
• Changes to House rules to make it harder to increase spending and easier to cut it so that we begin a new era of fiscal responsibility in Washington.
• An end to the practice of passing "comprehensive" or "omnibus" bills that package unrelated legislation together in an effort to avoid public scrutiny.

Republican Leader Boehner has also pledged to end the days of bills being written in the Speaker’s Office behind closed doors, and instead vowed to move bill-writing authority back to committees, which would be required to post amendments and votes online to ensure full transparency.
