The very first session of the first U.S. House of Representatives came to order on March 4, 1789, and a quorum was present on April 1, 1789.  Information on the House of Representatives from the 1st through the present Congress, including Member profiles, leadership, legislative information, historic events and much more, are available at the Office of the Clerk's House History website.

Electronic technology began an information transformation in Congress, making the legislative process increasingly accessible to Americans.  From 1844, when the first telegraph was sent from the Capitol, to 1993 when the House of Representatives launched the first Internet and e-mail constituent service, Congress has embraced technology to better and more efficiently communicate with the country. To learn more about the use of electronic media in the House of Representatives over the years, click here
