Pentagon-meeting_WEBAs a veteran of the United States Army, I understand the sacrifices that our troops, our veterans, and their families endure. Since coming to Congress, I have supported efforts to improve the quality of life for the brave men and women who sacrifice to serve our nation, as well as the many veterans who have served us in the past. I am committed to providing them both with services and benefits they have earned through their honest and faithful service to our nation.

In addition, my district is home to both Fort Benning in Columbus and the Marine Corps Logistics Base in Albany, so I am privileged to count thousands of military personnel and veterans among my constituency. Representing these military installations has given me a primary role in addressing a wide-range of issues that affect our service men and women. I have also traveled to both Iraq and Afghanistan to visit the troops and see firsthand the remarkable work our young men and women are doing there.

Freedom ranks right up with the air we breath on our priority list of blessings, and I – along with every American – owe a deep debt of gratitude to those who have faithfully served the country in order to make freedom secure.

The federal government offers a wide range of services and support for our nation's military communities. Please visit my Military Family and Veterans Resource Center for help navigating these government resources.

Priorities:

  • Continue to support legislation regarding the effects that traumatic brain injuries (TBI) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are having on wounded warriors;
  • Determine and develop ways to address and resolve key issues that impact military families;
  • Examine ways to lengthen the amount of time at home station between combat deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan to prevent burning out our troops;
  • Plan ways to maintain a quality education and access to life-long learning opportunities for military children as they relocate from duty station to duty station.
Accomplishments:
  • Authored Transitional Health Care Legislation which provides 180 days of transitional health care to those soldiers who separate honorably from active duty and agree to serve in the Selected Reserves at no charge to the soldier. The legislation has the potential to retain 13,000 trained and ready service members in our National Guard and Selected Reserve every year;
  • Established the Congressional Military Family Caucus which informs the Members of Congress and their staff on the challenges that military families face;
  • Obtained funding needed for Fort Benning military installation to improve the quality of living for post housing and facilities to include the National Infantry Museum;
  • Obtained $4,000,000 for Fort Benning National incident Management System Compliant Installation Operations Center;
  • As a member of the Subcommittee on Military Construction on the House Appropriations, received more than $50 million for projects at the Marine Corps Logistics Base in Albany;
  • As a Member of the Appropriations Committee provided more than $50.2 billion for veteran’s medical care. The Veterans Health Administration estimates they will treat more than 5.8 million patients in 2009 including veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan.
