Senate Unanimously Confirms Joseph H. Hogsett as U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Indiana

Bayh: Hogsett is “right person to hold this prestigious position of public trust”

Washington - The United States Senate unanimously confirmed Joseph H. Hogsett to serve as the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Indiana. Senator Evan Bayh recommended Hogsett to President Obama, who nominated him in July.

In making the announcement, Bayh said, "Joe Hogsett has a distinguished record of service to the people of Indiana and is the right person to hold this prestigious position of public trust.  In addition to the unanimous support of the United States Senate, Joe has the respect and support of Indiana law enforcement, judges, elected officials and community leaders.  His legal experience, insight, background and temperament will make him an outstanding U.S. Attorney."

Hogsett, of Indianapolis, Indiana, is a senior partner at Bingham McHale LLP.  He was appointed Indiana's 57th Secretary of State in 1988 and was subsequently elected to a full four-year term in November 1990.  He served from 1995-1997 as Senior Advisor and as Chief of Staff to then-Governor Evan Bayh.

"I was proud to join with Senator Lugar to recommend Joe Hogsett to President Obama," Bayh added.  "I hope his confirmation will encourage other senators to adopt what I call the ‘Hoosier approach' of working across party lines to select consensus nominees."

Hogsett is a member of the Indianapolis Bar Association, the Indiana State Bar Association, the American Bar Association, the Federal Bar Association, and the Seventh Circuit Bar Association.  He graduated with honors from Indiana University, where he was president of the IU Student Foundation, in 1978.  He received his JD from the Indiana University School of Law.  Hogsett holds Master's degrees in English, Theological Studies and History.
