Keeping our nation safe is one of the main jobs of the federal government. During Congressman Akin’s first year in Congress, our nation was rocked by the September 11 terrorist attacks.  Unfortunately, the world has not become a safer place since then.

Today our nation faces many threats, including proliferation of weapons of mass destruction (WMDs), Islamic terrorism, cyber attacks as well as long range missile threats from rogue regimes like North Korea and Iran.  We must be vigilant in guarding our country against this wide range of threats.  Since its creation, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has worked to improve the coordination between the various agencies that protect our country.  Unfortunately, DHS continues to struggle with inefficiencies and mismanagement.  Congressman Akin is committed to keeping our nation safe and making sure that the Department of Homeland Security is held accountable and uses taxpayer dollars wisely.

Confronting Terrorism

Protecting our nation from terrorism is not easy, and involves a delicate balance between protecting our rights and protecting us from terrorists.  Congressman Akin has supported efforts to use technology to intercept terrorist communications while protecting the civil rights of American citizens.  Congressman Akin has also cautioned against a rapid closure of the detainment facility at Guantanamo Bay.  Before we bring accused terrorists into our country, we must have a clear plan to keep these terrorists safely locked up, and to secure justice for their crimes against humanity.

Protecting Our Borders

Congressman Akin has long opposed illegal immigration.  We must secure our borders to prevent illegal immigration, stop the flow of drugs, and prevent terrorists from entering our country.  Congressman Akin has repeatedly voted to build a fence on the border with Mexico as well as other efforts to increase the capability of the Border Patrol and local authorities.
