Calls for Extending Tax Cuts for All Americans

Congressman Todd Akin (R-Mo.), today spoke out against Democrat plans to significantly increase income taxes.

Akin released the following statement:

“While Democrats are preparing to raise taxes by $3.9 trillion, ordinary Americans are still struggling to find work.  It is wrong to prioritize the singling out of some Americans for tax increases at the detriment of creating jobs.

“Clearly, democrats remain at odds with the priorities of the people they are supposed to represent. Letting current tax rates expire amounts to a massive tax increase on job creators and all tax-paying Americans.

“Instead of raising taxes, Congress should take a hard look at the budget and prioritize spending reductions that will eliminate the deficit and address the national debt. I firmly believe that the practice of sun setting tax breaks is backwards way of doing things in Washington. Rather, it is increases in taxes and spending that should come with sun set provisions.

“Taking concrete steps to reduce wasteful, debt-based spending will restore confidence in our economy and spur job creation.

“Therefore I will be fighting for the extension of the Bush tax cuts for all Americans.”

"The American Revolution broke out, and the doctrine of the sovereignty of the people came out of the townships and took possession of the state. Every class was enlisted in its cause; battles were fought and victories obtained for it; it became the law of laws. ... The people reign in the American political world as the Deity does in the universe. They are the cause and the aim of all things; everything comes from them, and everything is absorbed in them."
