Health Reforms Gives Patients More Rights, Says Becerra

The protracted fight to bring about health care reform that was eventually encapsulated in a 1,000 page plus bill approved by congress, is now seeing the light of day as several key provisions went into effect last Thursday, Sept. 23.

U.S. Rep. Xavier Becerra (D-Los Angeles) in a written statement hailed the “new set of rights” he says American families will now be able to use when dealing with health insurance companies. The Patients’ Bill of Rights under the Affordable Care law will ban the worst practices of the insurance companies, says Becerra.

“Starting today, your insurance company can’t drop you just because you get sick,” Rep. Becerra said last week in a written statement. “No longer can your child be denied coverage if he or she is born with an illness or disability. And the limit that insurance companies often place on lifetime benefits will be prohibited. The days when your family could be plunged into devastating medical debt and bankruptcy because of a serious medical condition are becoming history.”
