Rep. Judy Chu (D-CA) issued the following statement regarding today’s announcement that the Justice Department will file a lawsuit challenging Arizona’s SB 1070 as unconstitutional and is seeking a preliminary injunction against it before the law is set to take effect at the end of the month, as well as a permanent injunction:
“I applaud the Justice Department's decision to challenge Arizona's immigration law,” said Chu. “This misguided policy is not only unconstitutional, it's un-American in the way it separates families and hurts real people. Arizona's law is an excessive – and obvious – reaction to the reality that, for far too long, the federal government has neglected its responsibility and authority over immigration policy. That's why Congress must prevent the emergence of other patchwork fixes to our broken system and pass comprehensive immigration reform this year.”
Congresswoman Chu’s career in politics spans 24 years. She is a member of the House Education and Labor, Government Oversight and Judiciary Committees. Prior to her election to Congress she served three terms as the Assemblymember representing the 49th District, where she chaired the important Assembly Appropriations Committee. A lifelong educator, Congresswoman Chu taught community college classes in Los Angeles and East Los Angeles for 20 years. She holds a Ph.D. in psychology and a B.A. in mathematics.
Congresswoman Chu is a strong advocate for effective and humane immigration reform. She is on the House Immigration Subcommittee and is an original co-sponsor of the Comprehensive Immigration Reform (CIR-ASAP) legislation.
