Congresswoman Pelosi joins Supervisor Sophie Maxwell and community leaders to celebrate the 75th anniversary of Social Security. |
Today’s middle-class families are struggling to pay for exploding health care costs, rising college tuitions, and high energy bills. Many Americans are also facing the dismal prospect of finding their pensions increasingly at risk. These realities make saving for retirement an even greater challenge.
Social Security is our nation’s solemn pledge to our seniors – a promise of a safe and secure source of retirement income for millions of Americans. Protecting Social Security strengthening this vital programs for future generations, is one of my top priorities.
During the last Administration, I strongly fought against President Bush’s plan to privatize Social Security. Working with President Obama, we were able to pass health insurance reform, which closes a gap in Medicare Part D prescription drug coverage - known as the ‘Donut Hole’ - while extending the life of Medicare by at least a decade.
Congress must address the long-term funding challenges to Social Security, but any reforms we enact must not add to the federal deficit or weaken guaranteed benefits that American workers have earned through a lifetime of work.
I will continue to fight ongoing attempts to privatize Social Security in whole or in part, but we must do more so that every American has the opportunity to build a secure retirement.
