Cummings Welcomes Economic Recovery, New Jobs

Cummings Welcomes Economic Recovery, New Jobs

More Americans are seeking work, more Americans are returning to work.

(Washington, DC) – Congressman Elijah E. Cummings (MD-07) today released a statement following the largest job growth since 2006. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics announced that 290,000 American workers had returned to work in April. Unemployment rose to 9.9 percent, as 800,000 more unemployed workers believed they could find jobs and either returned to or entered the labor pool.

Employment was up in many sectors including manufacturing and construction, which were both hit particularly hard by the economic downturn. Factory employment has risen by 101,000 since December.

The BLS announcement came just a day after Minority Leader John Boehner made belittling statements, regarding employment improvement.

“Just as every job lost is a reason for concern, every job gained is a reason for optimism,” said Cummings. “While it is good news for the Obama Administration and for the policies they have pursued, it is most importantly a winning day for America. We must take a close look at the economic indicators. As jobs are being added, production is up, retail spending has improved, and American families are saving more. We are recovering, and since we are all in this together, I would invite Mr. Boehner to root for the home team, to root for America, and to let his constituents know that the numbers and statistics bear that recovery out.

“I also ask Mr. Boehner and the rest of my colleagues to help pass the Local Jobs for America Act, to help address the causes of chronic unemployment. Too many people are still without jobs so, along with the Local Jobs for America Act, I will keep fighting for small businesses, fighting to keep people in their homes and fighting to create good jobs. Our plan is working and we must keep fighting to bring America all the way back.”
