Congressman Higgins Announces Application Period for SAFER Federal Fire Grants

Congressman Brian Higgins (NY-27) announced the application window for grants provided through the Department of Homeland Security Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Services (SAFER) program is now open.   SAFER grants are aimed at increasing the number of firefighters and enhancing a department’s ability to comply with federal standards that ensure that their communities have adequate protection from fire and fire related hazards.  This year Congress appropriated approximately $420 million for the SAFER program.

“I encourage local companies to apply for funding through this federal grant to help support outreach and recruitment of the next generation of first responders,” said Higgins.

The applications and program guidance document for FY2010 SAFER grants is available on the Department of Homeland Security website for the Assistance to Firefighters program at www.firegrantsupport.com.  The website also provides information on program priorities, frequently asked questions, and an applicant tutorial.  The application period will close on Friday, September 17, 2010 at 5:00pm.

Applicants with questions can contact the SAFER grant help desk from 8:00am to 5:00pm Monday through Friday at 1-866-274-0960 or firegrants@dhs.gov.  For more information or assistance feel free to contact Congressman Higgins’ office at 716-852-3501.
