“Western New York is a leader in providing this nation with breakthrough medical research and cutting edge defense technology,” said Congressman Higgins. “These federal funds support those initiatives and other projects that foster job creation, neighborhood revitalization and economic growth.”
Below is a summary of projects supported by Congressman Higgins which will receive funding through this legislation:
- $2,000,000 – Roswell Park Cancer Institute
- Roswell will use these funds to develop an Advanced Cancer Genome Institute, a world-class program for the early detection, prognosis and treatment of cancer and other diseases.
- $2,240,000 – Hauptman Woodward Medical Research Institute
- Toward research with the goal of acquiring effective treatments against the drug and multi-drug resistant bacterium Acinetobacter baumannii. This project will address the recent rapid increase of severe opportunistic post-wound infections in our soldiers caused by Acinetobacter baumannii.
- $400,000 – Canisius College Science Building
- The new science center will include five new interdisciplinary research laboratories in bioinformatics, quantitative sciences, cellular molecular biology, analytical chemistry, and neurosciences.
- $200,000 - Richardson Complex
- Funding will be utilized for capital improvements to prepare the buildings and grounds for a regional Architecture Center, City of Buffalo Visitor Center, and hotel.
- $300,000 – Global Vascular Institute
- Kaleida Health is reconfiguring the cardiac, stroke, and neurovascular clinical programs operated at Buffalo General Hospital and Millard Fillmore Gates Circle Hospital into a new Global Vascular Institute on Buffalo’s Medical Campus aimed at providing world-class care for patients.
- $150,000 - SUNY Fredonia Small Business Incubator
- The SUNY Fredonia Technology incubator promotes economic growth, small business development and job creation by providing support services to new, innovative, technology-based companies.
- $1,000,000 – Dunkirk Airport
- Dunkirk Airport is undergoing construction of a 1,000 foot runway and taxiway extension to Runway 24. The new runway will support economic and business development in Chautauqua County by better accommodating the business aircraft that utilize the Airport.
- $200,000 - Town of Cheektowaga Public Safety
- This funding will support for law enforcement technology to enhance public safety along the Buffalo/Cheektowaga border. Town of Cheektowaga. Community organizations, law enforcement and representatives have formed the Buffalo/Cheektowaga Revitalization Task Force to address crime and other issues in the border community.
- $200,000 - WNY AmeriCorps Service Corps
- For a program to provide workforce training and opportunities to at-risk youth.
- $4,595,000 – Upstate High Speed Rail
- Funds will be used to improve grade crossing safety at selected crossings to facilitate high speed rail on segments of the Empire Service Corridor.
- $800,000 – Carleton
- To produce Microclimate Cooling Units (MCU) and associated hardware and install them in Marine Corps M1 tanks. Use of the MCUs by our troops will significantly reduce soldier thermal heat stress, greatly improve soldier alertness and performance, and reduce resultant soldier injuries and casualties. Carleton Technologies is a Cobham unit operating in Orchard Park, NY.
- $3,600,000 – Calspan
- For modification of the X-49A VTDP Compound Helicopter Technology Demonstrator to incorporate the Adaptive Digital Automated Pilot Technology (ADAPT) and Supplementary Power Unit (SPU) system. Successful demonstration of the VTDP Compound Helicopter technology will provide for modernization of military’s rotorcraft technologies to address current helicopter limits in speed, range, ceiling, and lift capabilities. Calspan has a location in Cheektowaga, NY.
- $2,400,000 – SURMET
- To create an integrated, domestic manufacturing capability to produce Aluminum Oxy-Nitride (ALON) and Spinel Optical Ceramic components in large quantities and sizes at affordable prices. ALON is recognized as the premier transparent armor material with 50% weight and thickness reduction compared to current hard-glass armor. While government ballistic and IED testing has shown exceptional results, the material is currently too expensive, and is not currently produced in sufficiently large quantities for transparent armor applications. Surmet has a location on Hertel Avenue in Buffalo, NY and 33% of the project would take place in WNY.
- $1,600,000 – MOOG
- To provide improved hydraulic rotary actuator technology to develop the all-electric ship and submarines for the Navy. These systems will automate many systems, thus keeping sailors out of harm’s way. Moog is located in East Aurora, NY.
- $197,000 - Buffalo River Environmental Dredging
- To remove and/or remediate contaminated sediment in the Buffalo River.
- $1,428,000 - Black Rock Channel and Tonawanda Harbor
- Funding allows for operating and guard gate sill repairs, Bird Island Pier repairs, project condition surveys and maintenance dredging.
- $1,548,000 - Buffalo Harbor
- Funding will be used to remove the current sediment backlog within the functional harbor areas and repair severely deteriorated sections of the south breakwater
- (amount pending) - Smokes Creek
- To support relocation of the creek to improve the fish habitat and allow for public access to the Lake in Lackawanna, NY.
