Congressman Higgins Announces $320,000 Recovery Act Grant for Vigilant Fire Department

Congressman Brian Higgins (NY-27) announced that West Seneca Fire District #6, Vigilant Fire Company, has been awarded a federal fire grant totaling $320,000.  The funding is made available by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security through the Recovery Act.  News of the grants, provided to only 104 fire companies nationwide and two in New York State, came from Secretary Napolitano this morning (September 23).

“This investment in West Seneca’s fire operations will support infrastructure improvements that will allow volunteer firefighters & EMTs to work more efficiently and provide long-term safety benefits for local residents and neighborhoods,” said Congressman Higgins.  “I congratulate Vigilant firefighters for putting together this successful application and commend them for their ongoing selfless commitment to serving this great community.”

Vigilant was awarded the program through the Fire Station Construction Grant Program which provides funds to departments to build new or modify existing fire stations to enhance response capabilities and protect communities from fire-related hazards.  Fire companies nationwide were awarded $166 million through the program.

Vigilant will use the grant to build an addition to their existing structure and add a sprinkler system.  The addition will provide needed space for Emergency Medical Technicians, allowing for a rapid response to medical calls.

Vigilant, located on Main Street, was organized in 1893.  The Department, professionally staffed by volunteers, has 47 active members providing fire, rescue and EMT services.
