Answers

How many fellowship positions are available at CBO?
CBO's ability to offer a fellowship(s) is determined by annual funding and Congressional authorization.

What guidance can you provide regarding the research projects?
As indicated, we are especially interested in projects in health economics, financial economics, macroeconomics and public finance; however, we encourage economists in other specialties to apply as well. Please review the following divisional overviews for more information: Health and Human Resources, Microeconomic Studies, Tax Analysis, Macroeconomics Analysis, and National Security.

When will you make fellowship appointments?
Timing would vary based on a number of factors including: candidate availability and timeliness of project subject matter. In some cases, we may provide an immediate appointment for a candidate who indicates current availability.

What criteria will be used to determine selections?
Division staff will review candidates' curricula vitae and prior publications. Selection decisions will be based on candidates' qualifications, the willingness to work on projects related to CBO's mission, and relevant information as to the candidate's ability to successfully complete assignments within the appointment.

Will there be an interview for CBO fellowships?
Suitable candidates will be contacted for an interview, which will allow the opportunity for both CBO and the candidate to discuss the scope of the fellowship and desired schedule in more detail. Any additional information needed will also be requested at this time.

When and how will I be notified if I have been selected for a fellowship?
CBO will review applications and attempt to inform candidates of their status within a month. Candidates will be notified via e-mail or regular mail.

Will CBO pay for relocation expenses?
Current law precludes CBO from paying relocation expenses. CBO can provide resource information to assist in the search for housing.

If offered a CBO fellowship, will I be an employee of CBO and receive benefits?
Visiting fellows may be engaged as temporary employees of CBO or on contract for a specific project. Availability of benefits for temporary employees is based on the length of the appointment.

What is the compensation for the fellowships?
Compensation is very competitive and will be commensurate with a candidate's education, experience, and qualifications.

Please explain the statement that fellows will be subject to the agency's ethics and security requirements.
CBO Visiting Fellows are subject to all of the ethics laws and rules applicable to employees of the U.S. House of Representatives. Among other things, those authorities impose limitations on outside employment, restrict levels of outside earned income for senior CBO staff, and require that all staff avoid conflicts of interest. Prior to an appointment, candidates who are under serious consideration for an appointment will be required to complete a form reporting their outside activities and income.
