Biography

Congressman Gary Peters is the United States Representative serving Michigan's 9th Congressional District in Oakland County.

With 22 years experience in the financial sector, he was among a handful of new Members appointed to the Financial Services Committee.  He also serves on the Science and Technology committee.

In his first term, Congressman Peters has authored and passed legislation to promote growing sectors, supported small business tax cuts and is leading the fight to kick start small business lending to create jobs.  He has written legislation to cut taxes for middle class families, wrote and passed the measure to ensure that large financial institutions repay every cent of the Wall Street bailout, supported a discretionary spending freeze and successfully fought a congressional pay raise.  The Oakland Press says that Gary Peters is “keeping his promises” to be fiscally responsible and support small businesses.  National Journal ranks Congressman Peters the most moderate of any Member of Congress from Michigan, and among the most moderate Members in the country.

Gary also helped lead the fight to ensure the survival of Chrysler and General Motors, saving thousands of jobs, and is now helping the industry look to the future, including authoring and passing the Advanced Vehicle Technology Act to create 21st Century jobs and reduce our dependence on foreign oil.

The son of a World War II veteran, Congressman Peters served America as a Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Navy Reserve.  His reserve duty included serving our nation in the Persian Gulf in support of Operation Southern Watch.  After the September 11 terrorist attacks, Gary again volunteered to serve our country through Reserve duty.

Along with his 22 years as an investment advisor, Mr. Peters has also served as a Michigan State Senator, a Rochester Hills City Councilman, the Michigan Lottery Commissioner and as a professor at Central Michigan University.  He has a Bachelor’s degree from Alma College, an MBA from the University of Detroit-Mercy, a law degree from Wayne State University and a Masters degree in Philosophy with specialization in the ethics of development from Michigan State University.

Gary is a fifth generation Oakland County resident and he and his wife Colleen reside in Bloomfield Township.  They have three children: Gary, Jr., an Albion College graduate, and Madeleine and Alana, who attend Bloomfield Public Schools.
