Biography

Congressman Brett Guthrie represents Kentucky's Second Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives. The Second District is home to Fort Knox, Mammoth Cave National Park, Abraham Lincoln’s birthplace, and many of the Commonwealth’s most treasured locations.

Congressman Guthrie serves on two committees for the 111th Congress, the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee and the Education and Labor Committee.

Congressman Guthrie sits on three Transportation and Infrastructure subcommittees:  Aviation; Railroads, Pipelines, and Hazardous Materials; and Economic Development, Public Buildings, and Emergency Management.

He also sits on three Education and Labor subcommittees:  Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions; Healthy Families and Communities; and Higher Education, Lifelong Learning, and Competitiveness.

Recognized for his proven leadership and commitment to education, Congressman Guthrie was named the top Republican on the Higher Education, Lifelong Learning, and Competitiveness Subcommittee.  He also holds a leadership role within the Republican Conference as an Assistant Whip.

Congressman Guthrie attended the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, NY, graduating in 1987 with a degree in economics.  Upon graduation, he served as a Field Artillery Officer in the 101st Airborne Division - Air Assault at Fort Campbell.  Guthrie later earned a Master's Degree from Yale University in Public and Private Management.

Following his military service, Congressman Guthrie joined Trace Die Cast, the Bowling Green, KY based manufacturing business that was started by his father.  The company began with only five employees and has grown to employ more than 500 workers.

First elected to public office in 1998, Guthrie represented the 32nd District in the Kentucky Senate.  In Frankfort, he was a leader in education issues, receiving the African American Equity Coalition's “Children's Champion” award and the College Board's “State Education Leader of the Year.”

Married to the former Beth Clemmons, they have three children, Caroline, Robby, and Elizabeth.
