McNerney Announces Enrollment Open for Post-9/11 GI Benefits PDF Print E-mail
Application available online

May 5, 2009

Washington, DC – Congressman McNerney announced today that enrollment is now open for educational benefits available from the Post-9/11 Veterans Educational Assistance Act, which was signed into law last year.  Veterans who served on active duty beginning on or after September 11, 2001 are eligible to apply for educational benefits that cover tuition costs and provide stipends for housing and books.

“Our nation owes a debt of gratitude to the new generation of veterans that have served our country since September 11, 2001,” said Rep. McNerney.  “The Post-9/11 G.I. Bill honors these brave young men and women for their service by providing much needed educational benefits.”

“After WWII, the original GI Bill returned about $7 to the economy for every $1 dollar spent,” continued Rep. McNerney.  “Similarly, the investment of the Post-9/11 GI Bill will open new doors for veterans and play a part in restoring the strength of the economy.”

Veterans can apply online for the benefits at http://www.gibill.va.gov/.  The Department of Veterans Affairs will begin processing applications on August 1, 2009.

Details of the benefits include:

  • Servicemembers, including those returning from Iraq or Afghanistan, can receive up to 36 months of education benefits, including stipends for housing and books.
  • Veterans have 15 years from the time of discharge or release from active duty to use the benefits
  • Veterans can use their benefits for program fees, tuition, books and housing.
  • The bill establishes the Yellow Ribbon GI Education Enhancement Program, under which the VA will match dollar for dollar voluntary contributions to veterans from institutions whose tuition exceeds the benefits available from the Post-9/11 GI Bill

Veterans that have questions about which educational benefit program will best suit their needs can call the Department of Veterans Affairs GI Bill hotline at 1-888-GIBILL-1.  Congressman McNerney’s offices are also available as a resource for veterans seeking assistance.  The Congressman’s Stockton office can be reached at 209-476-8552 and the Pleasanton office can be reached at 925-737-0727.
