Washington, D.C. – Today, Congressman Jerry McNerney (CA-11) announced that Dong Seung Shin won the 11th Congressional District Art Competition.  Shin, a junior at California High School in San Ramon, won for his painting entitled “Home of the San Francisco Crabs.”

The showcase and 11th Congressional District Art Competition was held on Saturday at the Grand Theatre Center for the Arts in Tracy.

“I am continually impressed by the talent and quality of work produced by all the students who enter the competition,” Rep. McNerney said.  “I look forward to seeing Dong Seung Shin’s work every time I walk to the Capitol and showing it to visitors from the 11th district.”

As the winning piece, “Home of the San Francisco Crabs” will hang in the Cannon Tunnel, a busy walkway inside the U.S. Capitol building used daily by Members of Congress and visitors to Washington, D.C.  The winning art entry from each Congressional district is displayed there for one year.

In addition to having his artwork on display in Washington, D.C., Dong Seung Shin will be flown, with a guest, to Washington, D.C., to attend an awards ceremony on June 24, 2009.

Second place winner was Winnie Chang, also a California High School student, for her oil painting entitled “A Sunday in San Francisco.”  Honorable mentions were awarded to Caroline Kim, a Foothill High School student for her pencil and watercolor piece called “Leading the Diversity of America” and to Jacqueline Mariko Whistler, an Ann Sobrato High School student for her watercolor and ink work entitled “Subway.”

A distinguished panel of judges from the 11th district selected the winning entry.  The panel was comprised of the following:

  • Linda Jeffery Sailors, Founder, Dublin Fine Arts Foundation and former Mayor of Dublin
  • Claudette McDermott, Founder, Pleasanton’s Poetry on Canvas
  • Ellen McKissock, Member, Morgan Hill Art Commission
  • Marvin Rothschild, Chair, Tracy Art Commission
  • Brandie Spencer, Founder, Stockton’s Empowering Young Voices

The competition is part of the annual nationwide Congressional Art Competition which showcases the artistic talents and abilities of students in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and the U.S. territories.  Each Member of Congress hosts a competition among high school students in his or her district and the winning artwork from each district is featured in a display in Washington, D.C.
