July 10, 2009

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Jerry McNerney (CA-11) announced today that Lodi Unified School District will receive a $235,137 grant from the Department of Education to improve school emergency preparedness.

“It is great news that Lodi will be receiving a grant of over $235,000 from the Department of Education,” said Rep. McNerney.  “Because of these funds, our schools will be able to improve their preparation for emergencies and strive to ensure our students’ safety.”

“We’re very excited to receive this grant and look forward to working with our partners to make sure we’re ready for any emergency,” said Associate Superintendent, Dr. Odie Douglas.  “These funds will help make sure we have the resources and training needed to preserve the safety of our students and staff.”

The Department of Education is issuing these grants to help schools improve and strengthen emergency management plans.  Recipients are intended to work with community partners such as local law enforcement and public health and safety agencies to provide training for school staff and to set in place emergency procedures.  The funds can be used to conduct vulnerability assessments, provide training, purchase emergency supplies and engage in simulation drills.
