Will recognize anniversary at upcoming Senior Assistance Workshop in Brentwood

August 16, 2010

Brentwood, CA – Congressman Jerry McNerney (CA-11) released the following statement today in recognition of August 14, 2010 as the 75th anniversary of Social Security.  The original legislation was signed into law by President Roosevelt on August 14, 1935.

“This past weekend we celebrated the 75th anniversary of Social Security.  Since its inception in 1935, this remarkable program has continuously provided financial stability and a reliable source of income to millions of Americans.

“Over seven decades after the creation of Social Security, this program remains an incredibly important economic safeguard that we as Americans highly value.  We must continue our commitment to support Social Security and ensure that this crucial program remains available for future generations.”

Congressman McNerney will be recognizing the 75th anniversary of Social Security at his Senior Assistance Workshop on Tuesday, August 17th from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Brentwood Senior Activity Center, located at 193 Griffith Lane.

Representatives from the Social Security Administration, Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program (HICAP), and Contra Costa County Aging and Adult Services will be on hand to offer one-on-one assistance to seniors with obtaining benefits, including applying for Social Security and Medicare benefits.
