Pryce Receives “Champion of Women’s Health Award”
from Health Care Advocacy Groups
Pryce honored for her career work on cancer, women’s health issues

Washington , DC – On Tuesday, Congresswoman Deborah Pryce (R-Columbus) received the “Champion of Women’s Health Award” from a coalition of national health care advocacy groups for her fifteen years of leadership on issues impacting women’s health. Pryce, Co-Chair of the House Cancer Caucus and author of numerous health care-related bills and laws, received the award from a coalition of organizations that includes the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Advocacy Alliance, the National Osteoporosis Foundation, the Y-ME National Breast Cancer Organization, and the Medical Imaging and Technology Alliance.

An estimated 2.4 million women living in the U.S. have been diagnosed with and treated for breast cancer, and the number of new cases of female invasive breast cancer is expected to increase slightly in 2008. Women also make up 8 of the 10 million Americans estimated to have osteoporosis. Screening and early detection are key factors in finding a cure for these diseases.

“Over their lifetimes, women face an array of unique health care issues, and the federal government must remain a committed partner in funding research and raising public awareness of these threats,” said Pryce. “But, ultimately, we as women must take stock in our own lifestyles and practices to ensure we live longer, healthier lives. Early detection and screening are critically important tools in helping women stay healthy.”

Pryce is a nationally recognized leader on cancer and health-related issues, and was a co-founder and currently co-chairs the House Cancer Caucus. She is the recipient of the Congressional Leadership Award by the Alliance of Dedicated Cancer Centers (ADCC), is a Member of the James Leadership Society of the Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center, and was awarded the Distinguished Advocacy Award from the American Cancer Society (ACS) – the ACS’s highest honor. This Congress, Pryce helped introduced legislation (H.R. 1072) to ensure that adequate attention and resources are paid to women’s health issues. The bipartisan bill, the Women’s Health Office Act, will provide a permanent authorization for offices focusing on women’s health, and ensure that women’s health will continue to be a priority for medical research dollars and investment.
