Scott Receives Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters - WASHINGTON, DC - Representative Robert C. “Bobby” Scott (VA-03) received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), in honor of his “exemplary service to the Commonwealth of Virginia and the United States of America.”  The honorary degree was awarded Saturday at VCU’s winter commencement at the school’s Siegel Center in Richmond, VA.  ...(more)

Bobby Scott to Hold Town Hall Forum to Discuss the 2008 Election Process - WASHINGTON, DC - Congressman Robert C. “Bobby” Scott will hold a Town Hall forum to examine the 2008 election process.  Both the successes and problems encountered on November 4, 2008 will be discussed.  One of those successes was the experience of record turnouts in both the primary and general election cycles in Virginia this year.   Joining Congressman Scott at the forum will be experts on voting issues.  One issue to be discussed is the NAACP’s lawsuit filed against the Commonwealth questioning whether the state had adequately prepared for Election Day.   The goal of the Town Hall is to determine what highly successful voting procedures or practices should be models for all jurisdictions and precincts and what legislative fixes may be needed at the state or federal level to address problems or undue complexities experienced in the voting process. ...(more)

12.01.08 | Gang Legislation Study Released - WASHINGTON, DC - On Wednesday morning, December 3, 2008, Dr. Barry Krisberg, juvenile justice researcher and President of the National Council on Crime and Delinquency (NCCD), will release a NCCD critique and comparative analysis of the legislative approaches in the 110th Congress to address gangs.  The critique and analysis will compare S. 456, the "Gang Abatement and Prevention Act" and its House companion, H.R. 3547, with H.R. 3846, the “Youth PROMISE Act” sponsored by Congressman Robert C. “Bobby” Scott.  S.456 and H.R. 3547 both emphasize increased punishment and other suppression approaches; the Youth PROMISE Act emphasizes an alternative approach, using evidenced-based prevention and intervention strategies to prevent crime.  ...(more)
