The Energy & Commerce Committee has the widest range of responsibility in the House, overseeing health care, energy, environmental protection, telecommunications, trade, consumer protection and other important issues. As a committee member, I have worked on all of these matters and have become a nationally recognized leader on environmental justice, racial and ethnic health disparities, domestic violence, and universal health care. I am proud to serve on the House Committee on Natural Resources, where I continue my work to protect the environment, and am Vice Chair of the House Democratic Steering & Policy Committee, which determines committee assignments and develops policy initiatives for the Democratic Caucus. I am also a member of the Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming. This special unique policy committee was established at the request of Speaker Pelosi in early 2007 to add resources and urgency to the commitment of this Congress to addressing both the dangerous dependence of the United States on foreign oil and the looming threat of climate change to global ecosystems and economies. |
