Rep. Velázquez Receives Legislator of the Year Award

National Electrical Contractors Association Praises
Chairwoman’s Leadership on Small Business Issues

WASHINGTON – The National Electrical Contractors Association last week recognized House Committee on Small Business Chairwoman Nydia M. Velázquez with their 2008 Legislator of the Year Award. NECA presented the award for the Chairwoman’s work on addressing the challenges of small firms in today’s economic environment.

“Members of the electrical contracting profession work daily to improve and maintain the infrastructure of our cities, while balancing the responsibilities of operating a small enterprise,” Chairwoman Velázquez said. “It’s an honor to receive this recognition from the hard-working men and women who benefit communities nationwide.”

Small businesses play a critical role in the economy, with these firms creating up to 80% of new jobs. Chairwoman Velázquez is dedicated to ensuring small businesses have the resources they need for success, believing the nation must invest in entrepreneurial development to jumpstart economic recovery during these troubled times. Under Chairwoman Velázquez’s leadership, the Small Business Committee has acted in a bipartisan manner to a pass a record number of legislative items aimed at improving opportunities for small firms.

“Helping entrepreneurs succeed is a proven way to revitalize the economy,” Chairwoman Velázquez said. “By addressing the challenges our electrical contractors face, we can open the door for innovation, prosperity and growth.”
