Chairwoman Velázquez Receives Wheat Advocate Award

for Second Year in a Row

WASHINGTON, D.C.—On Wednesday, March 12, Representative Nydia M. Velázquez (D-NY), who chairs the House Committee on Small Business, received the 2007 Wheat Advocate Award.  It was bestowed by the National Association of Wheat Growers (NAWG).

Each year, NAWG recognizes Members of Congress who have shown the greatest dedication to their industry.  The Chairwoman was one of only 10 Members to receive the honor in 2008.

“Our nation’s economy depends on small businesses, of which wheat growers are an important part,” said Chairwoman Velázquez.  “I am honored to have been selected for this award, and I remain committed to ensuring these entrepreneurs have the tools and business support they need to succeed.”

During the presentation, NAWG highlighted the Chairwoman’s efforts to address the concerns of rural small businesses—particularly the future of renewable fuels and a fair farm bill.

"Wheat growers are very appreciative of Congresswoman Velazquez's support for agriculture and her ongoing efforts to educate others about the importance of a successful agricultural industry to both rural and urban America," said David Cleavinger, president of the National Association of Wheat Growers. "We especially value her help in defeating harmful amendments during the House farm bill process. We were pleased to name her one of our Wheat Advocates for 2007 and look forward to working with her and her Committee in the future."

The Chairwoman said she would continue to pursue a strong agenda for our nation’s agricultural sector.  “That includes a stepped-up effort to improve access to capital, and working to ensure that rural entrepreneurs have access to reliable shipping services at reasonable rates,” she added.
